STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Two new lithium-ion battery energy storage systems (BESS) are being proposed for construction on a busy strip of Victory Boulevard, and if the developers obtain the required federal, state and local permits for their construction, both sites will be located on the same side of the Travis thoroughfare, situated just 0.4 miles apart -- one occupying eight acres of land.
“Swiftsure will be capable of storing enough energy to power 500,000 homes -- more than the total number of residences on Staten Island,” Hecate Grid, a utility-scale energy storage operator which is currently in the design phase for one of the projects, noted in a statement about its plans for 3861 Victory Blvd. -- a massive BESS that, on paper, will store three times the amount of power that Staten Island requires. However, according to NYC Census data collected in 2020, there are only 180,883 homes located here.
